M/s Bandita Phukan was born on 16th February 1948 in Dhekiajuli town in Sonitpur District in Assam. She spent her childhood in Arunachal Pradesh then NEFA ( North East Frontier Agency ). Thus, her childhood experiences mainly based in Arunachal Pradesh. Then due to change of the Assamese medium to Hindi medium in the school of Arunachal Pradesh her mother came to the state of Assam with her along with her other two sisters and admitted her Nagaon Govt. Girls High School. She studied in Nagaon upto the Higher Secondary (then it was pre-university ) and then she appeared the admission test of Assam Engineering College (AEC) and graduated in the branch of Mechanical Engineering in 1971. Bandita is the First lady Mechanical Engineer not only in Assam but in the North East.

After graduation she served in Assam Gas Company, Duliajan, Oil India Ltd. In Duliajan and then joined the Assam Industrial Development Corporation ( AIDC ). At first she joined the Assam Conductors and Tubes Ltd. A subsidiary unit of AIDC and then the parent organization AIDC. She took voluntary retirement from AIDC in 2001 for joining an assignment in USA. She came back from USA after 2 years to India and joined some private organization. After few years she switched over to a literary job and continues.

Bandita was married to Mr. Syamanta Phukan, a graduate in Mechanical Engineering from AEC. They have one son Adim and one daughter Natasha.

Bandita started her literary life i.e. writing as a translator from English to Assamese. Then after her marriage she started her children novels many of which were awarded, latest Sahitya Academic Award in children literature in 2011 for her book Seujiya Dharani and Govt. Assam Literacy Award in the same year. She has also been Awarded for Children Novel by Publication Board. Nirmali Dutta Translator Award by Assam Lekhika Santha. "Sampriti Saikia Tuktuki Bota" was awarded for her total contribution for Children Literature from Assam Lekhika Samaroh. "Dulal Sarma" Award for best short story by Lekhika Samaroh. "Banipathar Bota" for best Children Novel by Assam Lekhika Santha. Bandita wrote many science fictions. She is the first and only lady in Assam as well as in the North – East writing science Fictions. Her science Fictions are been translated into Bangla and English.

Bandita used to write also short stories and novels for adults, translate both children books as well as novels for adults from English into Assamese. She wrote 4 (four) books on pure science. She wrote one comics in English on Joymoti – a historic Patriotic lady during Ahom kingdom; this comics was been published by Amar Chitra Katha, Mumbai which been translated to various state languages in India. National Book Trust published some of her children novels in Assamese and then translated to various state languages in India. Till date more than 200 of short stories written by her been published. TV serials made based on her children novel, short stories and science fictions. She wrote technical based dramas for All India Radio Guwahati which are been broadcasted regularly. She is also the editor of the children section in “SaaDin”.

One of her book "Mohan Bigyanir Xoixob Kal" has been translated into Bodo Language.
